We have in our possession two small books, with the name Mary G Smale inside the front cover. They are filled with poetry copied out from magazines and journals of the time. One date given is 1832. So who she is remains a mystery. She must have been middle class to have had time to write out these poems.
We wondered if she was a sister of William Smale (b 1791), or had married one of his brothers.
