John Henry Hodgson Smale (1826 - 1898) GG Grandfather

Born: 26.7.1826, Morrice Town, Plymouth.  (Baptised: Stoke Damerel Church. 3.8.1826)
Parents: William Smale and Ann Stocker.
Married:  24.10.1847 to Mary Ann Waddon at St Andrew’s Church, Plymouth.(9/498). Living Queen St, Plymouth at this time. Mary Ann living Russell Street.

HMS Cumberland: The 13th Cumberland was a 70 gun ship, launched at Chatham in 1842. She weighed 2214 tonnes and carried a crew of 620 men.  In March 1854 she sailed to the Baltic Sea as war with Russia was imminent.  Cumberland was involved in the attack on Bomarsund, Finland in August of that year. The 13th Cumberland ended her career as a training ship and was finally decommissioned in 1889 when she burned at her moorings.

1891 Census: 1 Simpson Road, P’sea.  JHH Smale, 64, married, Retired Fleet Eng, RN; Mary A, 65;
Charlotte Waddon 63, spinster, companion to sister.

Certificates for Royal Navy between May 1852 and June 1864.
12.5 years at Sea, (boilermaker), broke legs (hearsay), Eng Capt RN. Rank Inspector in Charge of Machinery Afloat.  One of the first Navel Chief Engineer Officers.(Next on list for Vice Admiral, hearsay)
1858 became a Mason, in Barbados.
1862 left Navy, see passing Cert of Qualification.
1874 letters wanting to commute his pension. 
1874 living at 352 Commercial Road, Landport(?), Portsmouth.
Commuted half his pension and set up some sort of mini bank (like a credit union), it fell through.
Bought a school?


Died: 2. 11.1898, Portsea (j/a/s, 2b/290) of Haematuria , 6 months, cystitis 3 months., reported by son WJ Smale, present at the death 29 Clarence RoadGosport. JHH died at 203 New RoadBuckland RoadKingston, Portsmouth CB. Retired Flet Engineer RN.

Naval Widow's Pension



1901 Census:    Head of family, St  Stephen's Parish, Portsmouth, aged 74.  Living with sister Charlotte Waddon.


Died: 1906 2b/299 jfm Portsmouth.
